This is a vintage wine, meaning all the Prosecco grapes that went into this baby were from the 2013 vintage. And these grapes were grown in the very sweet spot of the Prosecco producing zone--the Conegliano region in Veneto. That makes this frothy, fun-loving bubbly a true treat.
A great wine for simply sipping and/or with light appetizers. Light straw color, pleasing effervescence; light to medium bodied, dry to off-dry on the palate, a little bit of sugar, but decidedly fresh and crisp; apple, flowers and light mineral in the flavors; medium finish, smooth and pleasing in the aftertaste.
A little history of Prosecco for those interested: Unlike the Champagne method, in which the secondary fermentation that produces carbon dioxide bubbles takes place in the bottle, Prosecco’s bubbles are produced in large, pressurized, stainless-steel tanks. The resulting wines show none of Champagne’s yeasty, toasty flavors, instead preserving the grapes' fruitiness.
The birth of Prosecco dates back to early times when farmer-winemakers tossed their very ripe grapes into open-topped vats, letting fermentation occur naturally without temperature control. This uneven process left residual sugar and carbonation in the wines (which were so unstable they would sometimes explode when the farmers tried to bottle them).
